The Department of Agriculture – CAR supported the Baguio City Veterinary Office’s (CVO) free neutering on April 19, 2017 at the CVO – Baguio Office.

The Provincial Veterinary Office – Benguet and Benguet State University also came to join the event.

Dr. Brigit Piok, City Veterinarian of Baguio, says that their aim is to lessen the population of cats and dogs in the city by neutering. This is for the reduction of stray animals that could potentially spread diseases, such as rabies, parasites, and skin disease; biting incidents; and not be a public nuisance, said Dr. Piok. Also, basic needs such as food and shelter might not be given to your pets if they’re too many, she added.

The free spay and neuter service is an annual event by the CVO – Baguio. “We appreciate the Livestock Division of the Department of Agriculture – CAR because they’re the one that started sponsoring this. From then, it became a regular activity”, Dr. Piok said.

This year’s activity was made possible by the International Wildlife Coalition Trust (IWCT), a UK-based organization that funds activities regarding animal welfare. Suzanne Llanera, the country representative, mentions that in the Philippines, their programs are focused mostly on dogs and cats. “The programs now are mobile clinics and we plan to do educational. Our objective is to help Filipino dogs and cats”, she stated.

According to Dr. Piok, “the support and cooperation of the veterinarians here in the region is good. Veterinarians from the local government units, Department of Agriculture, and Benguet State University all help each other when there activities like these.”

A total of 59 animals were neutered. For dogs, 19 were castrated and seven were spayed. While 13 cats were castrated and 20 were spayed.
